Abstract

This paper examines the reasons for the decisive failure of Socrates's courtroom speech in Plato's Apology in relation to the importance of ethos as a principle of persuasion as proposed by Aristotle. For this purpose, the evaluation of Socrates' ethos by the accusers and audiences in the Athenian court was analyzed, focusing especially on the introduction and statement sections of Plato's Apology. First, we see that the prejudices against Socrates' ethos held by audience in the Athenian court were much stronger than expected. Aristotle said in Rhetoric that the influence of ethos is very great in the beginning of a speech. However, he said that the use of logos is important in a court speech. Socrates devotes a considerable portion of the introduction of the Apology to eliminating prejudice against his ethos. Therefore, it seems appropriate to use a strategy to eliminate slander or misunderstanding about the speaker before the speech and build trust in the speaker. Second, it analyses structurally the three accusations against Socrates that Plato presents: the accusations of the first accusers [A], the court receipt [B], and the court indictment [C], examining how they differ and are similar. Thus, it explains how the judgement that ‘Socrates is unjust’ is arrived at. Third, it analyses the correlations between the three accusations against Socrates. This shows that the Athenians‘ assessment of Socrates’ ethos is closely linked to accusations [A], [B] and [C]. As a result, the court indictment [C], while immediately refuted by the principle of the Logos and with some effect, did not easily change the audience's mind about Socrates' ethos. Thus, the failure of Socrates‘ defense appears to be primarily due to the prejudice against Socrates’ ethos held by the Athenian court audience.
