Abstract

In Plato's Apology, Socrates is shown in the first half of the dialogue as a serious and sincere refutation of the accusations against him, but in the second half, he is shown frankly and boldly criticizing the attitudes of the Athenian citizens toward life. However, Socrates' attitude was very consistent from beginning to end. First, in Plato's Apology, Socrates focuses on the issue of 'truth' from the first words of his court speech. He tried to speak frankly not only about himself but also about others. Socrates actually analyzes the court accusations through logos and argues clearly. Nevertheless, he says that if he is found guilty, it is because of the prejudice caused by existing slander and jealousy. Second, in relation to Socrates' parrhesia, it is analyzed through the five concepts of parrhesia that Foucault explains: [P1] frank, [P2] truth, [P3] criticism, [P4] risk, and [P5] duty. Thus, I would like to suggest that Socrates' apology is very consistent if explained in terms of truth and parrhesia. First, [P1] and [P2] explain the two meanings of parrhesia, then [P3] is related to the phenomenon that can happen to the subject of parrhesia in [P1] and [P2], [P4] is related to the way the subject of parrhesia in [P1] and [P2] speaks, and [P5] is related to the purpose of the subject of parrhesia in [P1] and [P2] speaking. The five concepts of parrhesia presented by Michel Foucault vividly show Socrates's aspect as a practitioner of parrhesia in Plato's Apology, while he is arguing in the Athenian court. Furthermore, through the five core concepts of parrhesia, he makes clear in a new way why Socrates was found guilty and sentenced to death.
