Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to reveal that the Encomium of Helen written by Isocratic is a political speech. In the late 380s B.C. Most of Sophists in the ancient Greek world took the form of epideiktikos logos as subjects that were mostly unrelated to reality or difficult to praise. Isocrates' Encomium of Helen was also treated as a type of speech for the promotion for his schools or for the display of rhetorical abilities, and has been understood as a non-serious speech that has little to do with reality. In fact, however, Encomium of Helen was a political speech that accurately understood and reflected the situation in Athens and Greece in the late 380s and early 370s, enlightening to Greek world for a constructive way. This paper seeks to substantiate this claim. First, It will analyze the date and the times of Encomium of Helen. And then it will be revealed that the myth-historical scenes in this text actually fit in with the analysis of the contemporary Greece and present an solution symbolically. Through this, It would like to emphasize that the epideictic speech was not just an intellectual spur, but was able to have political influence through rhetoric.
