이 논문은 아리스토텔레스의 『수사학』에 나타나는 수사학의 핵심 원리들을 살펴보고 수사학이 위치해 있는 실천학적 지평을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 아리스토텔레스의 학문 분류에 대한 전통적인 해석에서 수사학은 제작학에 속하는 것으로 알려져 왔다. 쿠퍼의 연구에서 보는 것처럼 『수사학』은 “연설 작성의 방법을 알려주는 것”으로 이해되었다. 국내의 연구에서도 수사학은 흔히 제작학으로 분류되며 “정치와 법률의 영역에서 청중을 설득할 수 있는 말을 만들어내는 기술”로 이해된다. 그러나 아리스토텔레스의 『수사학』에는 완성된 연설이 수사학의 산물이라는 규정이 나오지 않는다. 수사학의 목적이 연설문 작성에 있는 것이 아니기 때문이다. 그렇다면 수사학을 제작학으로 분류하는 것은 텍스트상의 근거가 충분하다고 하기 어렵다. 아리스토텔레스는 수사학의 성립 근거를 연설의 본질 규명에 둔 것이 아니라 설득의 요소를 발견하는 데 두었으며, 따라서 그가 다른 학문에서도 원리와 원인을 찾은 것처럼 수사학에서는 설득의 원리를 탐구했다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 아리스토텔레스가 이 수사학을 실천학의 지평 위에서 말하고 있다는 사실이 중요하다. 이는 그가 국가 공동체 안에서 공적인 사안에 대해 진리와 정의를 관철하기 위해 말을 통해 유익과 덕과 정의를 다루는 수사학이 유용함을 강조하는 대목에서도 잘 읽을 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the core principles of rhetoric that appear in Aristotle's 『Rhetoric』 and to reveal the ground of practical knowledge on which rhetoric is located. In the traditional interpretation of Aristotle's classification of knowledge, rhetoric has been known to belong to the ‘productive knowledge’. As seen in Cooper's research, Rhetoric was understood as “teaching how to write speeches.” Even in Korean studies, rhetoric is often classified as productive knowledge and is understood as “the art of creating words that can persuade the audience in the areas of politics and law.” However, in Aristotle's Rhetoric, there is no provision that a completed speech is a product of rhetoric. This is because the purpose of rhetoric is not to write speeches. Then, it is difficult to say that there is sufficient textual basis for classifying rhetoric as productive knowledge. Aristotle's founding of rhetoric was not based on identifying the essence of speech, but on discovering the elements of persuasion. Therefore, it can be said that he explored the principles of persuasion in rhetoric, just as he discovered principles and causes in other disciplines. However, the fact that Aristotle speaks of this rhetoric on the horizon of ‘practical knowledge’ is important. This can also be clearly read in the part where he emphasizes the usefulness of rhetoric that deals with benefit, virtue, and justice through words in order to enforce truth and justice on public issues within the state community.
