이 글은 설득은 수사학의 일이 아니라는 아리스토텔레스의 일견 생뚱맞은 언명의 진의를 묻는다. 예상 밖의 언명이라 놀랍긴 해도 그가 『수사학』 I 권 1장의 내용을 요약하는 가운데 하는 말이라는 점과 학인 한에서의 수사학의 과제를 명시하는 대목에 나오는 언명이라는 점에서 사태 해결의 단서를 찾을 수 있다. 전자는 수사학 프로젝트의 정당화와 관련이 있고 후자는 수사학의 본질 규정과 관련이 있다. 가짓수로는 두 물음이지만 실상은 둘이 밀접하게 연결되어 있어 하나의 사태를 드러낸다. 한편 수사학의 학적 과제 규정에는 논리적 귀결이 따르는 바, 수사학의 가치중립성과 수사학 사용의 필요성이 그것이다. 수사학의 학적 성격을 보다더 선명하게 드러내는 데에 일조하는 물음들이다. 수사학의 과제 규정과 관련하여 제기되는 여러 물음의 논의는 결국 수사학의 학적 전문성과 아리스토텔레스적 의미의 설득이 어떤 유의 것인지를 체계적으로 일목요연하게보여준다.
Abstract
It is the task of this article is to deal with the surprising statement of Aristotle that the job of rhetoric is not to persuade. The key to the question is where he makes the statement. At the end of Chapter I 1 of the Rhetoric, he gives a résumé that mainly relates to what has been presented so far. First of all, the affinity of rhetoric and dialectic as well as the usefulness of rhetoric is mentioned again, whereupon the statement immediately follows that the job of rhetoric as such is obviously not to persuade, but that its task is to see in every case what the persuasive is. The affinity of rhetoric and dialectic relates to the justification of Aristotle’s rhetoric project and the statement of the goal of rhetoric as such to the definition of its nature. Both seem to present two different things, but show one single state of affairs in that they are closely related to one another. The definition of the nature of rhetoric has a number of far-reaching consequences, under which the neutrality and the necessity of the use of rhetoric fall. The discussion of the questions that are asked regarding the definition of the nature of rhetoric clearly shows how the competence of rhetoric is measured and what persuasion in the proper sense is for Aristotle.
