초록
In rhetoric, we have the question "why an argument can persuade?". Why are we persuaded by someone, and not by somebody else, the two giving the same argument? From this, we realize that an argument in rhetoric depends finally on the condition "who persuades who?". I pay attention to Rhetoric Book I, chapter 2, where Aristotle presents the character of speaker(ethos tou legontos) as the most important thing in persuasion. He points out that there is persuasion "through character whenever the speech is spoken in such a way as to make the speaker worth of credence".(1356a4-6)Rhetoric is a practice rather than a theory. It is for the speaker to meet the public with language. This work is not to investigate the world of truth in which one contemplates the unchangeable with the eyes of intellect. But it is to move the public who are in variable situations and interests, through a steady exercises of imitation. Then the condition "who speaks to whom?" is important. This is the reason why the character of speaker and the education of virtues which gives him a good character are brought into relief in Aristotle's Rhetoric.
