Abstract

This paper examines the traditions and globalization strategies pursued by the National Theater of Korea around the time of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, which positioned itself as a platform for East– West reconciliation in the post-Cold War era. Central to this inquiry are the National Theater’s institutional periodicals, which promoted its activities and articulated its strategic direction. These periodicals, which have undergone multiple title changes since their inception prior to the Korean War, prominently featured the Theater’s efforts in reviving tradition and engaging with globalization during the 1980s. Of particular interest is the re-launch of the periodical in September 1987—after a suspension in 1982—under a new title, just ahead of the Olympics. This re-publication coincided with the Theater’s broader campaign to advertise and legitimize its globalization agenda. Through an analysis of these periodicals, this paper explores how the Theater’s leadership constructed and promoted an invented tradition under the banner of “national” culture, responding to the themes of the Olympics and post-Cold War rhetoric. It critically assesses the contradictions inherent in the state-led globalization strategies of the era, particularly the exclusion of the populist minjung discourse—which was central to contemporary cultural debates—and the emphasis on cultural delegations to Eastern Bloc countries as a means of asserting ideological superiority over North Korea. Ultimately, this study highlights the historical limitations of these initiatives, which, while invoking global unity and post-Cold War ideals, nevertheless retained and reproduced Cold War-era cultural frameworks.
