Abstract
In the 21st century, society has become unstable, and musicals also deal with social problems. Musicals are not a genre that is considered suitable for dealing with serious issues, but they can deal with complex issues within their own structure in which songs and dramas combine. Next to Normal tells the story of a housewife who suffers from a mental illness called bipolar disorder and her family. This play has a linear narrative, but instead, the song is combined with the drama to stimulate the audience's perception and convey the theme. In order to express the state of Diana, who is an ordinary American middle-class woman but is mentally precarious, the play uses songs to stop the progress of the drama and express her inner self. These songs reflect her inner or illusion and sometimes lie . However, other songs convey the truth. This mixture allows the audience to receive cognitive stimulation and think about who is normal behind the narrative. This play uses a combination of song and drama to make the audience who watch it think about the theme, which leads to a new perception of mental illness by the audience as a member of society. This work shows how musicals can deal with social problems within their structure.
