Abstract

This paper aims to examine the changes in Chinese politics during the Xi Jinping era through an analysis of the constructive characteristics of the political elite. This approach is based on the recognition that the composition of the political elite can serve as an indicator of the political dynamics within the power structure and policy orientation. The scope of the political elite covered in this study includes the Central Committee from the 15th to the 20th Party Congresses from 1997 to 2022, including members of the Political Bureau and its Standing Committee. The key indicators of constructive characteristics include age composition, turnover rate, regional origin, education and major field of study, as well as key career trajectories. The analysis revealed the following: Firstly, due to the strong consolidation of Xi Jinping's power and the absence of a clear successor, the likelihood of Xi Jinping's long-term rule is very high. Secondly, the high level of education among the political elite and the presence of experts in cutting-edge scientific fields suggest a low probability of a return to ideologically driven politics. Thirdly, the significant representation of individuals from the public security and military sectors indicates a strong commitment to social control. In this regard, Chinese politics are expected to remain stable during Xi Jinping's rule. However, the increasing uncertainty regarding the post-Xi Jinping succession raises the likelihood of intensified internal conflicts and competition within China's political elite in the future.
