Abstract
This study analyzes the structure and orientation of “knowledge” (or knowing) as presented in the Korean folktale type The Person Who Understands Animal Speech. To this end, 55 collected versions of the tale were classified by the gender of the protagonist, and each type was comparatively examined to explore how knowledge is formed and what social meanings it carries. In these narratives, knowledge is not depicted as merely a supernatural talent or extraordinary gift. Rather, it encompasses processes of sensory receptivity, affective resonance, and accumulated learning through relational engagement with the world. As such, knowledge in this context functions as a relational and practical act of cognition. In tales featuring male protagonists, knowledge serves as a driving force that mediates and reconstructs institutional order in times of crisis. The male figure often uncovers the truth through his ability to understand animals, thereby clearing false accusations and correcting errors in official judgment. In some versions, he even replaces the existing authority figure. This narrative pattern reveals how knowledge is closely tied to public authority and leads to institutional recognition and the acquisition of power. By contrast, tales with female protagonists also depict knowledge as instrumental in resolving communal crises, but its mode of manifestation and outcome differ. Female characters typically reveal their knowledge not through direct assertion but through a process of silence, symbolic action, and trial. This eventually leads to the restoration of social relationships and community stability, although it does not result in formal recognition or change in institutional status. While both male and female types share a common structure of resolving crisis through the revelation of truth, they diverge in how knowledge is expressed, how it relates to authority, and what kinds of social rewards it yields. Women’s knowledge operates primarily through affect and ethical responsiveness, and can be interpreted as a strategic response for survival and relational healing. Ultimately, this tale type depicts knowledge as a process of ethical subjectivation realized through relational dynamics with the other. The differing orientations and narrative strategies according to gender offer insights into the interplay of knowledge and power, speech and silence, institution and ethics. Moreover, by centering the relationship between human, nature, and otherness, the tale challenges anthropocentric epistemology and foregrounds the ecological and ethical imagination inherent in traditional narrative.
