Abstract
This paper explores the cotrasting character of “extraordinary traitor(역적) and failed or failing female helpers” in oral folktale about a historical figure Kim Jajeom. While Kim Jajeom is infamous for his role of “traitor” or “villain,” often contrasted with the loyal Im Gyeongeop, some narratives depict his downfall stemming from his rejection of advice from his sister and wife, who cautioned him against seeking public office or warned him about his clothing. The recurring pattern of “female’s attempt to aid – male’s rejection and failure” in oral transmisson suggests that female helpers, despite possessing wisdom and insight, are invoked primarily to narrate failure. Consequently, these female helpers, lacking an independent “her own room or place,” can be considered an example of “homo atopos.” Examining the specifics of Kim Jajeom-related oral folktales, Kim Jajeom is largely depicted negatively in contrast to figures like Im Gyeongeop or his grandfathers. However, certain birth narratives, geomancy tales, and local legends acknowledge aspects of his extraordinary nature. Thus, Kim Jajeom, despite his negative image, maintains narrative power as a historical figure and is positively portrayed as an official who established the “Jajeom Weir”(자점보), anchoring him to a specific “place.” In contrast, female helpers are primarily depicted as attempting to prevent Kim Jajeom’s misguided ascent and his eventual exposure, often by adapting the existing Trial between Brother and Sister (오누이 힘내기) tale. Notably, tales like Kim Jajeom Caught Because of His Coat String (옷고름 때문에 잡힌 김자점) further diminish the agency of female characters, which was present in the Trial between Brother and Sister tale, to emphasize the character flaws of the “traitor” Kim Jajeom. Consequently, Kim Jajeom’s sister or wife represent the most constrained figures within the lineage of “women who sew clothes” and “women who oppose male family members,” rendering them “atopos” not only within Kim Jajeom tales but also within the broader context of the related Trial between Brother and Sister tale.
