한국어와 중국어의 ‘두려움’에 대한 개념화 양상 대조 연구 - ‘눈’을 중심으로 -

This paper aims to gain understanding of how the Korean and Chinese languages differ in their ways of expression. From the cognitive linguistics perspective of physiological metonymy, this study explores the universality and variation in the conceptualization of the basic emotion “fear” in the two languages. “Fear” can be expressed through physiological reactions, such as “screaming” or “frightened”. Since eyes, the most sensitive organ among the five senses, convey subtle emotions timely and accurately, this study will explore the conceptualization aspects utilizing “eyes” as the research object. This paper principally compares the conceptualization aspects between Korean and Chinese through the mechanisms of physiological metonymy and interaction of metaphor and metonymy. This specific methodology is as follows: a) if the “fear” can be easily inferred from respective meanings of the constituents, we conclude that “fear” is expressed through the mechanism of metonymy; b) if the “fear” requires second association to be fully comprehended, we conclude that “fear” is expressed through the mechanism of interaction of metaphor and metonymy. Through discussion of the commonalities and differences in conceptualization of the word “fear” between Korean and Chinese, this paper attempts to understand how the two languages differ in their ways of expression.
