초록
This study investigates what discursive strategies Korea and Japan’s foreign ministries employ to make conflicting sovereignty claims over Dokdo/Takeshima, although they base their arguments on the same historical evidence. The subjects of the study are the historical records and international agreements that the two countries’ foreign ministries commonly mention on their websites. By employing Halliday’s systemic functional grammar, this study analyzes what lexical choices were made and what process types were employed when old documents, Dokdo/Takeshima, Ahn Yong-bok (a fisherman of Joseon), international agreements were presented as participants in sentences. The results show that Korea’s foreign ministry emphasizes historical facts and events to support its claims, while its Japanese counterpart focuses on San Francisco Peace Agreement. Korea mainly uses material and verbal processes to present what were recorded on old documents. Although Japan uses the same two process types, it also employes modality and negative additives to undermine the reliability of old Korean records. When describing Dokdo/Takeshima, both Korea and Japan mainly used relational process. However, Korea describes historical events as the islets’ attribute, while Japan presents the facts about Takeshima such as natural environment and location as attribute. Japan utilized various types of processes to explain San Francisco Peace Agreement to emphasize its significance.
