Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effects of post-traumatic negative cognition and multidimensional experiential avoidance on borderline personality traits in college students with childhood and adolescence trauma and the mediating role of multidimensional experiential avoidance in the relationship between post-traumatic negative cognition and borderline personality traits. 528 college students in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi, Daejeon, and Jeonla participated in the survey, and 281 with childhood and adolescence trauma were finally selected for the study. The data were analysed through frequency analysis, average, standard deviation, independent t-test, Pearson’s correlation analysis, stepwise regression analysis, simple regression analysis, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS Win 21.0. The major results of the study were as follows. First, post-traumatic negative cognition, multidimensional experiential avoidance, and borderline personality traits showed a significant difference by gender. Second, while negative beliefs about the world was the most significant predictor of emotions restriction, negative beliefs about the self was the most significant predictor of identity unstability and self-damage. And multidimensional experiential avoidance was the most significant predictor of negative relationship. Finally, multidimensional experiential avoidance partially mediated the relationship between post-traumatic negative cognition and borderline personality traits in college students with childhood and adolescence trauma.
