Abstract
This research explores gender stereotypes that are changed by the cultural values emphasized by organizations focusing on the cultural fluidity of gender stereotypes. We selected a domestic food company as a case study to identify gender stereotypes and discriminatory impact on women. As a result of qualitative research and Word2Vec analysis about interview, the content of gender stereotypes fluidly changed. Women have changed from ‘beings who provide emotional support’ to ‘beings who need emotional support’. This perception reinforced women undermine work efficiency. Compliance, which was negatively applied to women, is perceived as loyalty to men, and non-compliance, which was applied positively applied to men as activeness, is perceived as an expression of complaint to women. It suggests the contents of male stereotypes are fluidly constructed as the most valuable in the organization. Contrasting assignment of cultural values leads to distinct perceptions that men are ‘easy to work with’ and women are ‘inconvenient to work with’. Gender stereotypes were reinforced when they were associated with marriage and managerial status. Thus, this study shows that an organization’s cultural values fluidly determine the contents of gender stereotypes, and the gender stereotypes are used to maintain superiority and inferiority between males and females.
