Abstract
[Purpose] This study investigates the teaching experiences of a novice special education teacher, focusing on the process of delivering daily living skills instruction to adult students with developmental disabilities. The teacher in question is also the researcher. [Method] To achieve this goal, the study employed an autoethnographic approach, a qualitative research method that critically reflects on personal experiences within a social context to foster theoretical understanding of one’s own life. In this context, the researcher, as a novice special education teacher newly appointed to a special school for adult students with developmental disabilities, retrospectively and reflectively described her experiences from both personal and sociocultural perspectives. [Results] First, the teacher’s student-instruction competencies were enhanced by developing individualized teaching plans based on each student’s level and characteristics, understanding sequential behavioral patterns, providing opportunities for repeated practice, and creating an environment that ensured participation and choice, thereby improving the effectiveness of daily living skills instruction. Second, the teacher’s family and educational community collaboration competencies were strengthened, supporting students’ acquisition of daily living skills through consultations with caregivers and communication with fellow teachers. Third, the teacher’s educational beliefs and professional thinking changed, leading to a recognition of the need for growth rather than relying on the same teaching methods each year, considering students’ perspectives and contexts, fostering positive thinking and confidence, and promoting qualitative professional growth. [Conclusion] Based on the findings of this study, it is suggested that novice special education teachers guiding adults with developmental disabilities can utilize these results as a basis for establishing tailored instructional plans according to students’ levels and characteristics, enhancing communication and collaboration within the educational community, and improving teaching competence and positive educational beliefs, thereby providing concrete support strategies.
