Abstract
[Purpose] In school-age children, discourse skills are essential tools for academic performance and social interaction. However, children with language disorders consistently demonstrate weaknesses in understanding and recalling discourse structures. To address these difficulties, intervention programs based on structured strategies have been actively implemented, particularly through single-case experimental design studies(SCEDs). While SCEDs provide valuable insights, they have limitations in terms of establishing a broader evidence base. [Method] A total of eight SCED studies published between 2000 and 2024 were selected based on predefined criteria. Intervention characteristics and outcome variables were analyzed. Effect sizes were calculated using PND and Tau-U, and methodological quality was evaluated using the quality indicators proposed by Reichow et al.(2008) [Results] Overall, discourse interventions demonstrated substantial effect sizes across both PND and Tau-U metrics. Statistically significant differences were observed by disability type and age group, with children with autism spectrum disorder and those aged 10 years and older showing greater effect sizes. According to the combined evaluation of primary and secondary quality indicators, two studies were rated as ‘strong’, one as ‘adequate’ and five as ‘weak’. [Conclusion] Structured discourse interventions were found to be effective for school-aged children with language disorders; however, few studies met rigorous quality standards. Future research should apply more rigorous methods to strengthen the evidence base.
