Abstract

[Purpose] This study aimed to examine the overall perspectives of service providers regarding communication about sexuality with individuals with developmental disabilities. The goal was to offer practical and policy implications for enhancing the competencies of service providers responsible for supporting and safeguarding the sexual rights of individuals with developmental disabilities. [Method] A total of 187 out of 237 staff members who consented to participate in the survey responded to an online questionnaire. These participants were staff members responsible for lifelong education, family support, and vocational rehabilitation services at disability welfare institutions located in 31 cities and counties in Gyeonggi Province. Perspectives on communication about sexuality instrument used in this study consisted of 18 items across three subdomains: values, comfort, and information. [Results] First, service providers generally did not perceive communication about sexuality with individuals with developmental disabilities as being adequately satisfactory. Second, while service providers recognized their roles in communication and counseling about sexuality as meaningful and valuable, their levels of comfort and information were significantly lower. Third, neither gender nor age had a statistically significant effect on the providers’ perspectives on communication about sexuality. Fourth, while work experience in the developmental disability field did not significantly influence perceptions, experience in sexuality education and related training was significantly associated with positive perspectives on communication about sexuality. [Conclusion] Based on the findings, the study offers practical and policy-level recommendations to enhance service providers’capacity to support the sexual rights and needs of individuals with developmental disabilities.
