Abstract
[Purpose] This study aims to identify the types of Korean Sign Language (KSL) learning textbooks widely used in educational settings and to examine the content related to Deaf culture within them. Based on these findings, the study seeks to propose a direction for integrated KSL and Deaf culture education to enhance learners’ intercultural communicative competence. [Method] The study analyzed 16 KSL learning textbooks through the following steps: ① classification of learning textbooks based on the balance between language and culture, ② examination of the structure and presence of Deaf culture-related content, and ③ frequency analysis of individual Deaf culture items. Considering the lack of research treating Deaf cultural elements independently within KSL education, this study adopted theories and frameworks from cultural education in the Korean language education field and adapted them to suit KSL education. [Results] Out of the 16 learning textbooks analyzed, 13 (81.2%) were classified as either language-centered or language-centered with some cultural integration. Of the 95 Deaf culture items identified, 87 (91.6%) belonged to the category of cultural knowledge, with little to no representation of cultural practices or perspectives. In terms of specific topics, daily life accounted for the largest share with 42 items (44.2%), followed by history (15 items, 15.8%), society (12 items, 12.6%), values (9 items, 9.5%), education (7 items, 7.4%), science and technology (4 items, 4.2%), arts (2 items, 2.2%), unclassifiable (2 items, 2.2%) and economy and geography with one item each (1.1%). [Conclusion] This study recommends the development of diverse types of Korean Sign Language (KSL) learning textbooks tailored to learners’ goals and proficiency levels, the implementation of integrated cultural education activities that encompass the three domains of culture —knowledge, practice, and perspective, and the establishment of a standardized curriculum that reflects the values of the Deaf community. This research can serve as foundational data for establishing and implementing a systematic approach to integrated KSL and Deaf culture education, ultimately contributing to the cultural integration and qualitative advancement of KSL education.
