Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of schema-based direct instruction on the word problem-solving of a student with autistic spectrum disorder. The subject was a male student with autistic spectrum disorder enrolled in a middle school. The multiple probe baseline design across behaviors was employed. The intervention was carried out in the student's home 3∼4 sessions per week. The subject was taught to use schematic diagrams to solve three types(change, group, or compare types) of word problems. The frequency of errors pre and pro the intervention were analysed. The results were as follows. The schema-based direct instruction was effective in increasing the word problem-solving performance of the subject and the enhanced performance was maintained after the intervention period. The error frequency was decreased. In conclusion, the results of this study shows that schema-based direct instruction has positive effects on the word problem-solving performance of students with autistic spectrum disorder, who generally have strong visual information processing abilities. The limitations of this study and suggestions for future study were addressed.
