Abstract
Social withdrawal, defined as behavior where individuals distance themselves from interactions with others in social contexts, is recognized as a representative internalizing problem in childhood and adolescence, holding significant developmental and clinical implications. In light of increasing academic interest, particularly with the recent surge in domestic research following the COVID-19 pandemic, this study aims to analyze research trends in social withdrawal by examining papers published in KCI-indexed journals from 1999 to 2023. provide a comprehensive overview of the current research landscape, and propose future research directions and challenges. The results of the analysis indicate that 85.8% of all studies were published after 2013, with 70.8% belonging to the field of social sciences. Early research predominantly focused on infants, toddlers, and elementary school children; however, after 2012, studies expanded to include diverse age groups, with middle school students (33.7%), elementary school students (21.0%), and high school students (19.1%) being the most commonly studied. Regarding research methodology, while experimental studies aimed at testing intervention effectiveness were typical until 2012, survey/correlational studies were most common(84.3%), with a sharp increase in studies utilizing panel surveys from the 2010s onward. In the analysis of research topics and variables, parental factors (48.3%) were identified as the most frequently studied contributors to social withdrawal, while individual factors (68.3%) were most commonly examined as outcomes. Self-report measures were the predominant method of assessment (74.9%). Based on these findings, this study highlights the need for expanding the scope of research areas and participants, promoting qualitative research and diverse experimental designs, considering the influence of social context, implementing classroom-level interventions, and adopting a multidimensional approach to social withdrawal.
