라이프치히 논쟁은 종교개혁의 역사에서 매우 중요한 의의를 지니는 논쟁이 다. 이논쟁은로마가톨릭과루터진영이서로갈등을해결하기위한노력과 자신들의 주장을 치밀하게 준비하여 정면대결을 펼친 첫 번째 논쟁이자, sola scriptura라고 하는 종교개혁의 핵심적 원리가 분명하게 천명되는 논쟁이다. 비록 논쟁의 출발이 되는 주제는 ‘교황의 권위’와 ‘전통과 교부’들의 권 위에 관한 논쟁이었으나, 결국은 성경의 원리에 누가 더 충실한가 하는 것으 로 이끌려진다. 논쟁을 통해 제시되는 것은, 첫째는 교황이나 공의회는 오류 의 가능성이 있다. 둘째는 교황의 권위 역시 제한적이다. 셋째는 신앙적 문 제에 있어서 궁극적이며 유일한 권위는 성경이다. 나아가 여기서 천명되는 sola scriptura는 주요한 특징을 지니는데, 첫째, sola scriptura는 성경의 문자적 의미에 충실할 것을 의미한다. 로마 가톨릭 학 자들이 성경에 대한 근거를 사용하지만 그들이 문자적 의미에 충실하지 않 고 곧 그들의 전통이나 교훈으로 달아난다. 둘째, sola scirptura는 하나님의 말씀만이 무오하며, 교회의 전통과 공의회의 권위는 성경의 권위에 복종해 야 한다. 공의회는 그 말씀의 결과물이다. 셋째, sola scriptura는 단순히 성경 을 근거한 해석이 아니라 그 해석은 객관성이 담보되어야 한다. 주관적이고 자의적인 성경 해석이 아니라, 성경해석이 궁극적이고 최종적인 권위를 갖 기 위해서는 객관성이 확보되어야 한다. 이와 같은 종교개혁의 근본 원리인 sola scriptura는 라이프치히 논쟁을 통해 명백하게 선언되었고, 현재까지 살아있는 최고의 원리이며, 영원토록 모든 신앙과 교훈의 시금석이 될 것이다.
Abstract
Luther’s Leipzig debate has a very important significance in the history of the Reformation. It was a debate in which the Roman Catholic and Lutheran camps made an effort to resolve their conflict, then it was clearly articulated the key principles of the Reformation, “sola scriptura”. Although the subject of debate was the debate over the authority of the Pope and of the tradition and of church fathers, it was eventually resulted in who is more faithful to the principles of the Bible. What was presented through arguments, is, First. the Pope or the Council has the possibility of error. Second, the authority of the pope is also limited. Third, the ultimate and only authority in the matter of faith and doctrines is the Bible. Furthermore, the sola scriptura, which was manifested here, has a some character: First, the sola scriptura means to be faithful to the literal meaning of the Bible. Roman Catholic scholars used the Biblical rationale, but they were not faithful in their literal meaning, instead they soon run into their traditions or doctrines. Second, the sola scrirptura means that only the Word of God is infallible, therefore the tradition of the church and the authority of the council must obey the authority of Scripture. The Council is the result of the Word, not the other way around. Third, sola scriptura is not merely a Bible-based interpretation, but its interpretation must be assured of objectivity. Objectivity must be secured in order for an Bible-interpretation to be ultimate and final authority, not subjective and arbitrary Bible interpretation. The sola scriptura, which is the fundamental principle of Reformation, was openly articulated in the Leipzig debate and will be the best living principle today, and a test of all faith and doctrine forever.
