루터의 ‘문자적 의미’와 그 해석학적 배경들

이 논문에서 필자는 루터의 ‘문자적’ 해석방법이 어떻게 그가 지녔던 성경해석의 전제, 해석의 목적, 해석의 실재적 동기에 의해 결정되었는지를 밝히고자 하였다. Sola Scriptura라는 성경해석의 대전제는 성경의 명료성을 요청하였고 결국 루터로 하여금 단일 의미를 찾도록 유도하였다. 루터가 ‘탑의 경험’을 통해 재확인한 율법과 복음의 대조는 성경의 모든 본문에서 역사적 의미를 넘어 그리스도를 읽어 낼 수 있는 해석방법을 요구했다. 루터의 동시대인 인문주의자 파벨의 문자적-예언적 읽기는 그러한 루터의 해석 목적을 달성할 수 있는 최상의 방법론적 선택이었다. 루터의 실천적, 목회적 성경사용 동기는 말씀선포와 성령의 조명에 대한 그의 강조에서 드러난다. 하나님 말씀이 지니는 효과와 능력으로 인해 말씀의 선포 자체가 중세의 4중적 의미 가운데 하나인 도덕적 의미를 수반하고, 성령이 조명하실 때 성경의 문자적 의미가 영적인 의미로 전환된다는 루터의 이해는 중세의 인위적 4중적 읽기를 그 내부로부터 붕괴시켰다. 루터의 성경해석이 단일하고 명료한 문자적 의미, 기독론적 의미를 찾는 작업으로 수렴된 것은 바로 이러한 이유들 때문이다. 즉, 루터의 해석방법은 그의 해석 전제, 목적, 동기에 의해서 결정되었다고 보아야 할 것이다. 이러한 결론은 종교개혁의 후예들에게 루터의 ‘문자적, 역사-문법적 의미’ 개념에 대해서는 제한적인 수용이, 그러나 그의 ‘오직 성경으로’라는 성경해석의 대전제와 ‘오직 그리스도’라는 해석의 목적, 말씀 선포와 성령의 조명이라는 목회적 성경사용의 동기에 대해서는 계속적인 강조가 필요함을 보여준다.
Abstract
This article purports to demonstrate how Luther’s hermeneutical presupposition, hermeneutical goal, and pastoral motive determined his interpretive method. ‘Sola Scriptura,’ Luther’s fundamental presupposition about the authority of Scripture, led him to the concept of the perspicuity of Scripture and eventually to a single meaning from Scripture. Luther’s ‘tower experience’ and the law and gospel antithesis asked for an interpretive method for finding Christ even in the OT passage beyond its historical meaning. For Luther’s hermeneutical goal, Faber’s interpretive method of literal-prophetic reading was the best methodological option. Luther’s pastoral motive is seen in his emphasis on God’s Word and the illumination of the Holy Spirit. With Luther’s understanding that the power and effect of God’s Word itself includes the moral implications for believers and that the illumination of the Holy Spirit turns the literal sense to spiritual sense, medieval church’s fourfold senses began to be collapsed. For these hermeneutical reasons, Luther came to claim the single, plain, literal, and Christological meaning of Scripture. This tells us that while his 16th century method is limitedly valid for today, Luther’s presupposition of ‘Sola Scriptura,’ his hermeneutical goal of ‘Solus Christus,’ and his pastoral emphasis on the power of God’s Word and the illumination of the Spirit are still binding.
