본 연구는 조나단 에드워즈(Jonathan Edwards)가 이해한 천국의 진보를 고찰한다. 에드워즈는 천국의 진보성과 완전성이 양립 가능한 좌표를 제시한다. 그리스도의 재림 이후 천국은 완성을 위한 진보는 없지만, 구속사역의 결과나 열매로써 진보가 있다. 성도의 지식, 행복, 역량의 크기는 다양하며, 죄가 발생하지 않는 피조물의 방식으로 영원히 진보한다. 에드워즈의 진보 이해는 과정신학과 구별된다. 과정신학은 신과 세계의 상호 의존적 진보를 제시한다. 이것은 신과 세계의 존재론적 구별을 제거하는 방식의 진보이며, 범재신론을 지지한다. 또한 과정신학의 진보는 실패 가능성에 열려 있으며, 천국의 진보성과 완전성을 왜곡한다. 그러나 에드워즈는 하나님과 세계의 비대칭 의존적 진보를 제시한다. 이것은 하나님과 세계의 존재론적 구별을 훼손하지 않는 방식의 진보이며, 개혁주의를 지지한다. 또한 천국의 진보성과 완전성을 확보하며, 과정신학보다 훨씬 더 역동적인 진보이다.
Abstract
This study examines Jonathan Edwards' understanding on progress in the consummated kingdom. Edwards presents coordinates in which progressiveness and completeness in the consummated kingdom are compatible. After the second coming of Christ, there is no progress toward the completion of the work of redemption. But the consummated kingdom is progressive as a result or fruit of the work of redemption. The saints have different size of knowledge, happiness and capacity, they are progressive forever in the way of a creature without sin. Edwards' understanding of progress is distinct from Process theology. Process theology presents the eternal progress of the interdependent progress between God and the world. This is an advancement in a way that removes the ontological distinction between God and the world, and supports panentheism. In addition, progress in Process theology is open to the possibility of failure. Therefore, it distorts the progressiveness and completeness in the consummated kingdom. However, Edwards presents the eternal asymmetric-dependent progress. This is progress in a way that does not undermine the ontological distinction between God and the world, and supports Reformed theology. In addition, Edwards secures the progressiveness and completeness in the consummated kingdom, Therefore it is a much more dynamic progress than Process theology.
