계몽주의 유토피아 사상의18세기 청교도적 수용: 조나단 에드워즈의 포스트밀레니엄 사상을 중심으로

이 연구는 에드워즈의 포스트밀레니엄 사상과 계몽주의 유토피아 사상의 연관성을 검토하고 있다. 서구에서 기독교의 밀레니엄 사상과 유토피아 사상은 그 시대를 반영하는 산물로서 긴밀한 관계를 유지하며 발전되어왔다. 따라서 이 연구는 먼저 유토피아사상의 발전과 에드워즈에게 영향을 미친 청교도의 종말론을 검토하고 있다. 18세기 뉴잉글랜드 상황에서 에드워즈는 당시 유행하던 계몽주의 유토피아사상을 일부 수용하여 자신의 개혁신학적 입장에서 포스트밀레니엄사상으로 발전시켰다. 우리는 그의 포스트밀레니엄사상에서 계몽주의 유토피아사상의 주요한 이슈였던 학문과 역사의 발전, 이성의 역할, 역사의 완성이 주요한 내용으로 구성되어 있음을 발견할 수 있다. 하지만 에드워즈는 맹목적으로만 계몽주의 유토피아사상을 따르지는 않았다. 그는 이를 개혁신학적 입장에서 비평적으로 수용하여 이성에 기초한 학문과 지식의 발전이 얼마나 불완전한지를 지적하면서 결국에는 기독교가 추구하는 하나님나라의 도래를 통해 진정한 유토피아가 성취될 것임을 드러내고 있다. 이처럼 계몽주의자들은 유토피아에 대한 낙관적 기대를 가지는 반면 에드워즈는 밀레니엄의 한계를 지적하면서 이후에 천국과 지옥이 영원히 지속되리라는 전통적인 기독교 종말론의 입장을 재확인한다. 에드워즈의 포스트밀레니엄 사상은 미국의 건국과 이후 미국이 가야할 방향을 설정하는데 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 미국의 건국은 밀레니엄 건설을 이루려는 신의 섭리로 해석되어 이 세상에서 의로운 제국의 역할을 감당해야할 사명을 가졌다고 기대되었다. 우리는 이 연구를 통해 계몽주의 영향 속에서 과학과 학문의 발전을 기독교적으로 해석하여 조화시키려했던 당대를 대표하는 기독교 지성인로서의 에드워즈의 모습을 발견하게 된다.
Abstract
This study examines the connection between Jonathan Edwards' postmillennialism and Enlightenment utopian thought. Christian millennialism and utopian concepts developed in a close relationship with each other as products of Western thought. This study first reviews the history of utopian thoughts and Puritan eschatology that had influenced Edwards. In the context of 18th Century New England, Edwards accepted some of the Enlightenment utopian ideas and develops his postmillennialism. His millennialism has the major utopian themes: the development of the academy and history; the role of reason; and the completion of history. However, he only critically accepts these concepts through the lens of Reformed theology. He sees the Enlightenment based only on reason as incomplete. He argues that true utopia will only be accomplished through the coming of the Kingdom of God at the end of days. Thus, the Enlightenment held an optimistic expectation of a utopia to be made in this world, while Edwards reveals the limitations of the Millennium and reaffirms the Christian eschatology concepts of heaven and hell. Edwards’ postmillennialism has had a major impact on the founding of the United States and its future direction. <Insert person or people here> interpreted the United States as a Christian country designed by divine providence to establish the millennium. It was expected to have a mission to serve as a righteous empire in this world. Edwards as one of representative Christian intellectuals who tries to adapt and harmonize Christian thoughts to his contemporary secular thoughts.
