조나단 에드워즈 신학의 계몽주의와 과학의 수용성 연구 : 관계적 존재론을 중심으로

이 연구는 에드워즈의 관계적 존재론을 통해 그가 18세기 계몽주의운동의 과학적 발견과 그 이론들을 얼마나 긍정적으로 수용하고 이를 자신의 개혁주의 신학에 접목하여 발전시켰는지를 점검하고 있다. 그의 고민은 신학자이자 목회자로서 하나님의 주권을 강조하는 개혁신학적 세계관을 가지고 자연세계에 대한 과학의 자연법칙 발견과 이로 인해 전개된 당시의 여러 이론들을 어떻게 기독교적으로 해석하느냐에 있었다. 에드워즈는 자연과학의 발전으로 인한 기계적 세계관이나 유물론에 반대하면서 기독교적 시각으로 관계적 존재론을 전개하였다. 그는 물질과 영적 세계를 나누는 이원론에 반대하며 오히려 과학의 발전을 통해 자연세계와 연결된 하나님의 섭리를 증명할 수 있다고 믿었다. 관계적 존재론은 하나님의 창조를 통해 이 세상은 체계적이고 긴밀한 관계 속에서 모든 만물이 질서 있게 조화와 균형을 유지하며 하나님을 향해 존재함을 주장한다. 이러한 에드워즈의 관계적 존재론은단지 형이상학으로 머물지 않고 그 자신의 신학 전반에도 영향을 미쳐 모형론과 창조론, 구속론, 종말론을 전개하는데 이론적 기반이 되었다. 그의 관계적 존재론에 대한 오해 가운데 하나님과 자연의 관계에 있어서 에드워즈가 플로티누스(Plotinus)의 유출설과 유사한 입장을 가지고 있다고 주장하기도 하고 동일한 맥락에서 이를 발전시켜 존 쿠퍼(John W. Cooper)는 에드워즈가 고전적 유신론의 창조주 창조물의 확고한 존재론적 구분을 결핍하고 있다고 보면서 범신론에 인접한 만유내재신론(panentheism)으로 보기도한다. 하지만 이는 지나치게 21세기 현대신학의 시각으로 그의 신학을 평가하고 있다고 판단된다. 우리는 이 연구를 통해 계몽주의 영향 가운데 과학과학문의 발전을 기독교적으로 해석하여 복음의 포괄성으로 이해를 시도했던그의 모범을 발견하게 된다.
Abstract
By focusing on Jonathan Edwards’ Relational Ontology, this study examines his acceptance of scientific achievements during the Enlightenment age and it’s influence on his theology. As a pastor and theologian, in Reformed worldview which puts an emphasis on the sovereignty of God, Edwards pondered on how to interpret scientific discover and theories. This lead him to develop Relational Ontology opposing the mechanical worldview and deism in his times. Relational Ontology is a kind of metaphysics of Edwards that divine creations exist harmoniously and orderly in this world. He develops and applies the ontology to his theology including the doctrines of trinity, redemption, and heaven. Edwards opposes a dichotomous view of dividing the material and spiritual world, rather believing that divine providence can be proofed through the development of science. Upon misunderstanding of Edwards’ Relational Ontology, there are some scholars who claim his ontology is not consistent with that of Reformed theology. For example, John Cooper argues that Edwards’ Relational Ontology lacks the classical division of creation and creator in theism and views it closer to panentheism. However, the scholars make a mistake to analyze Edwards’ arguments through contemporary theological view. Upon examination, we discover Edwards’ example as a good theologian that sought to understand scientific achievements during the Enlightenment in the sight of Christianity that God is centered.
