예수 그리스도의 승천에 관한 교리는 신자들의 장래에 관한 소망을 넘어서 현세적 삶에 있어서 중요한 신학적이고 목회적인 함의가 있음에도 불구하고, 전통적인 신학 연구사에서 중요한 위치를 차지하지 못했던 것이 사실이다. 예수 그리스도께서 과거에 십자가에서 성취하신 구원의 의미와 적용에 있어서는 방대한 연구가 이뤄졌지만, 승천하신 그리스도께서 지금 현재 이 땅의 교회를 위하여 행하시는 사역의 중요성에 대하여는 상대적으로 적은 비중으로 다뤄져왔던 것이다. 승천 교리의 신학적 의미를 되찾는 과정에서 개혁 교회의 전통을 되돌아 볼 때, 매우 흥미롭고도 지금까지 잘 알려지지 않은 것 중 하나는 조나단 에드워즈의 승천에 대한 관점이다. 에드워즈는 승천에 관한 논의에서 그리스도의 인성의 탁월함과 그의 신성의 무한한 영광을 그리스도의 아름다움이라는 관점에서 설명하고 있다. 따라서 에드워즈의 승천에 대한 관점은 그가 다룬 어떤 교리에서보다도 그리스도에 대한 그의 독특한 미학적 이해의 정점을 차지하고 있음을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
The doctrine of the ascension has not received a proper treatment in recent theological debates in spite of its vital theological implication for Christian living. In retrieving the theological significance of the doctrine of the ascension, one of the most intriguing, yet obscured so far is Jonathan Edwards’s view of the ascension. Edwards fully describes the excellency of the person of Christ and his infinite glory in his doctrine of the ascension. This, in turn, serves as culminating his peculiar concept of the aesthetic understanding of Christ.
