Abstract
This study analyzes Jonathan Edwards’s theology of heaven through the lenses of his theological aesthetics and biblical interpretation. Recent trends in Edwards scholarship suggest that his theology should be reconsidered from perspectives that emphasize biblical exegesis and aesthetic categories. For Edwards, “beauty” serves as a central theological concept, and heaven is the ultimate manifestation of God’s beauty and love. Edwards views heaven not merely as a philosophical ideal but as a concrete reality permeated by the infinite love and glory of the Triune God. He emphasizes that saints in heaven directly experience the divine glory through the beatific vision (visio beatifica), a harmonious blend of intellectual contemplation and sensory experience via glorified bodies. Furthermore, Edwards depicts heaven not as a static condition but as a dynamic and eternal progression into an everdeeper apprehension of God’s infinite beauty. This study highlights the interrelationship between Edwards’s theological aesthetics and biblical interpretation through his understanding of heaven, providing significant insights for contemporary Christian theology.
