Abstract
This study criticizes the trends of research on Calvin’s concept of God, which vary with the spirit of the age, and considers again his doctrine of God especially in his covenantal point of view. The insistence on the fatherhood of God from his covenantal point of view is based on the false understanding of his doctrine of covenant. Exploring his theology comprehensive, also investigating particularly his Commentary on Joshua, God reveals himself both as Lord and Father. This is the same in the divine creation and redemption. In the creation, God reveals himself both as Lord and Father. For Calvin, God’s covenant is a divine work, which has sinner, who lost this double knowledge of God, accept him again both as Lord and Father in Christ. To connect God’s mercy and his righteousness theoretically, which are the foundation of the knowledge of God as Father and the knowledge of God as Lord, might be beyond from the human thinking. But Calvin holds on to both the knowledge of God as Lord and the knowledge of God as Father. The Ark of the Covenant in his Commentary on Joshua means God’s presence, and this divine presence represents both his mercy and majesty. Calvin characterizes here the only one God as merciful God, whom his people should trust, and as righteous God, whom his people should fear. The knowledge of God as Father and the knowledge of God as Lord can be never separated for Calvin.
