부흥은 기독교 역사에서 항상 중요한 주제였다. 더욱이 한국교회의 규모가 급격히 줄어들고 있는 상황에서 부흥의 중요성은 더욱 크다고 할 수있다. 이러한 상황에서 19세기 미국 부흥 운동의 주역인 찰스 피니의 부흥신학과 방법론을 연구하는 것은 매우 의미 있는 일이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 피니의 부흥 운동은 그의 신학과 새로운 방법론으로 기독교인의 수를크게 늘렸고 노예제 폐지, 여성의 권리 확대 등 미국 사회에 엄청난 영향을 미쳤다. 그러나 피니의 신학은 칼빈주의에서 알미니안주의로 바뀌었고, 그의 방법론은 많은 논란을 일으켰다. 이는 피니가 그 시대의 흐름에 영향을 받았음을 시사하며, 개혁신학의 관점에 따라 그의 부흥신학과 방법론을 적절히 분석하고 평가할 것을 요구한다. 피니는 인간의 완전한 타락은 부정하고 부흥에 대한 하나님의 주권보다 인간의 역할을 중시했다. 이러한 측면은 개혁신학에 비추어 비판되어야 한다. 부흥에 있어서 인간의 역할도 중요하지만, 하나님의 주권을 더 중시했던 에드워즈의 노선을따르는 것이 개혁파 신학의 입장이다.
Abstract
Revival has always been an important topic in Christian history. Moreover, in the context of the Korean church’s rapid decline in size, the significance of revival becomes even greater. In this situation, studying the revival theology and methodology of Charles Finney, a key figure in the 19th-century American revival movement, can be considered highly meaningful. Finney’s revival movement significantly increased the number of Christians through his theology and new methodology, and had a tremendous impact on American society, including the abolition of slavery and the expansion of women’s rights. However, Finney’s theology shifted from Calvinism to Arminianism, and his methodologies sparked much controversy. This suggests that Finney was influenced by the trends of his time, and it calls for a proper analysis and evaluation of his revival theology and methodology from the perspective of Reformed theology. Finney denied the total depravity of humanity and emphasized human agency over God’s sovereignty in revival. These aspects should be critiqued in light of Reformed theology. Reformed theology, while acknowledging the importance of human agency in revival, follows the path of Edwards, who placed greater emphasis on God’s sovereignty.
