존 폴킹혼의 케노시스 창조론에 대한 비판적 평가

존 폴킹혼은 과학-신학자들 중 한 명이다. 이른바 자연과학을 전문으로 하는 자연과학자였다가 신학을 공부하고 신학자로 활동한 사람인 것이다. 이런 공로를 인정받아 폴킹혼은 템플턴 상을 수상하기도 하였다. 폴킹혼은 다른 과학신학자들과는 달리 현재적인 상태에서는 만유재신론을 받아들이지 않는 사람이다. 다만 종말론적인 상태에서는 만유재신론을 수용하는 입장이다. 이런 폴킹혼의 입장은 만유재신론을 명시적으로수용하는 몰트만과는 다른 입장이라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 폴킹혼은 몰트만의 자기제한으로서의 하나님의 창조에 대한 주장에 영향을 받아 케노시스 창조론을 주장하고 있다. 케노시스라고 하는 개념은 기독론에서 논의되는 용어이다. 신성의 자기 비움이라고 하는 케노시스 기독론과 관련한 논란이 존재하는데 이런 기독론의 용어를 창조론에 빌어쓰고 있는 것이다. 그 이유는 이 세상에 존재하는 악과 고난의 문제에 대한 해결 때문인 것으로 사료된다. 사랑의 하나님은 자기를 제한하심으로 세상을 창조하셨다는 것이다. 이런 폴킹혼의 케노시스 창조론은 몰트만의 케노시스창조론 보다는 온건한 입장인 것으로 보인다. 하지만 그 논리적 함축은 종말론적인 상태에서 만유재신론으로 흘러갈 수밖에 없는 필연성을 이미창조론 가운데 가지고 있는 것으로 보인다. 어떤 면에서 이땅에 존재하는악의 문제에 대한 책임을 하나님께 돌리지 않기 위해 하나님의 전지하심을 제한하였던 열린 유신론의 주장과도 비슷해 보인다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
John Polkinghorn is one of the scientist-theologians. He was a physicist who specialized in the so-called natural sciences, then studied theology and worked as a theologian and priest. In recognition of this contribution, Polkinghorn also won the Templeton Prize. Unlike other scientific theologians, Polkinghorn is a person who does not accept panentheism in the present state. However, in an eschatological state, he does accept panenthesim. Polkinghorn’s position can be said to be different from that of Moltmann, who explicitly accepts panentheism. However, Polkinghorn argues for the creation of Kenosis influenced by Moltmann’s claim of God’s creation as self-limitation. The concept of Kenosis is a term discussed in Christology. There is a controversy regarding the theory of Kenotic Christology, which is called the selfempty of divinity. The term of Christology is used in the doctrine of creation. It is believed that the reason is due to the solution to the problems of evil and pain in this world. The God of love created the world with self-limitation. Polkinghorn’s Kenitic doctrine of creation seems to be in a more moderate position than Moltmann’s Kenotic ttheory of creation. However, Polkinghorne’s theory of creation already seems to have the inevitability that will flow to panentheism in the eschatological state. In some ways, it can be said to be similar to the argument of the open Theism, which limited God’s omniscience in order not to blame God for the problem of evil in this world.
