초록
윌리엄 마틴(W.A.P.
Abstract
W.A.P. Martin’s The Evidences of Christianity (Tiandao Suoyuan, 天道溯源) is a Christian apologetic work written in China in the late 19th century. Whereas earlier missionaries primarily based their arguments for the existence of God on revealed theology, Evidences of Christianity emphasizes the universal truth and rationality of Christianity by actively incorporating elements of natural theology found in traditional Chinese thought and religion. By highlighting the universal truth and rationality of Christianity, Martin uses the cultural values intrinsic to East Asian traditions as his starting point for argumentation. Through natural theology, Martin logically examines such themes as the order of the universe, the purposeful creation of the world, the human conscience, and transcendent matters related to the soul, thereby providing evidence for the existence of God. While he entirely rejects the syncretic fusion of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism (儒佛仙), he nevertheless selectively embraces the Confucian principle of revering Heaven and loving humanity (敬天愛人) from an accommodationist perspective. By doing so, Martin asserts that Christianity is not solely a Western or Western-oriented religion, but one whose universal truths can take deep root within East Asian culture and philosophical traditions. This analysis explores how Martin’s natural theological approach in Evidences of Christianity harmoniously engages Chinese reason, morality, and traditional religious culture, making a persuasive case for the existence of God within the East Asian intellectual context.
