Abstract
The Lais of Marie de France draws attention from the fact that they are lais of ‘love’ intertwined with diverse social and political constraints, rational wills and passions, ethical choicesand conflicts, hinting at a shift of perceptions. Also the twelve Lais written by Marie de France,a medieval woman poet, are meaningful for rethinking the situation of medieval woman andmeaning of love if we wish to come to grips with the problems of ethical conflict and social balance, of various human emotions and related taboos, and of ethical choice. In this sense, Eliduc, the final lai of the Lais, is full of significance, because this story which has two titles tells of aman’s dilemma with two lords (political loyalties), two wives (marital doctrine), and makes people to reconsider the relation between love and social relationship in the Middle Ages, an earthlylove and a perfect love that can be attained in the love of God, and moreover a modification ofChristian ethics. When considering this, Eliduc, which deals with the issue of the man with twowives and resulting solutions, is a good example to reconsider various ethical problems in medieval french literature and the true meaning of love for a 12th-century woman poet.
