Abstract

Oliver Stone has been criticized for lacking the Vietnamese’s voices in hisVietnam films. Unlike Platoon(1986) and Born on the Fourth of July(1989) inStone’s Vietnam Trilogy, Heaven and Earth(1993) is based upon a Vietnamese woman, Le Ly Hayslip’s memoirs. Although Hayslip was a formerVietcong-turned-American, it is difficult for us to say that she represents thevoice of the Vietnamese throughout the Vietnam conflicts since she was not ahard-core Vietcong warrior. Rather, her story introduces the private aspectsof the war which have been silenced especially in the Vietnam-related filmsof the U.S. In the film, Le Ly is an innocent girl who is not just violated butalso thrown out by the Vietcong although she has been loyal to them. In order to survive, she follows her husband Steve, a sergeant in the U.S. MarineCorps, to the U.S. since her husband promises her freedom and affluence. However, instead of keeping the promises, Steve tries to control her with vio lence and threat. And eventually he kills himself due to PTSD. Le Ly finallyunderstands that only when she returns to her father’s lessons and Buddhist’steachings she could not just find her true self and peace in her mind but alsohave the power to forgive all the victimizers from the Vietcong rapists to herviolent American husband. Finally, Le Ly believes that she has found her trueself in between South and North, East and West, peace and war, Vietnamand America. With these enlightened insights, Le Ly might find the betteranswers and truths in her life as well as in the world.
