Abstract
This paper aims to derive the implications of a desirable language policy that each languagecommunity can take against the rapid changes of language ecosystem represented by the globalspread of English, through Singaporeans’ attitude towards Singlish. ‘Colloquial SingaporeanEnglish’ or Singlish has already established itself as an identity marker for Singaporeans sharing “Singaporeanness” in a multilingual Singapore. Singapore has received attention as an ideal model that has people with the highest English fluency in Asia, and institutionally preservesthe heritage languages of each ethnic group as specified by the Constitution. However, the spirit of the Singaporean Constitution to harmoniously develop English and several heritage languages has been greatly undermined in recent years. Standard English is still only ‘they-code,’and heritage languages, including Mandarin, are rapidly losing their vitality. In contrast,Singlish is taking roots as ‘we-code’ and as a ‘membership language’ that strengthens ties andforms rapport. The language attitudes of Singaporeans toward Singlish confirms that languagepolicy should be established on the basis of the consideration that language is not simply a toolof efficient communication but a delicate means of forming identity.
