(The Transactions of the Korea Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society)에 수록된 한국문화유산 관련 논저를 살펴보고자 했다.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the discourse on Korean cultural heritage as developed by Protestant missionaries in Korea during the 1910s and 1920s. Focusing on two key periodicals—The Korea Magazine and The Transactions of the Korea Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society— the research analyzes missionary-authored writings related to Korea’s cultural heritage. These texts, composed in the aftermath of the Japanese Empire’s archaeological surveys, offer insights into the shifting perceptions of Korean heritage. The missionaries did not regard cultural assets as neglected remnants but rather as objects that warranted preservation and continued care. Their writings demonstrate efforts to reconstruct the historical origins of Korean heritage, reflecting a participation in the broader search for cultural authenticity. While the missionaries’ discourse may not represent a fully developed academic achievement in terms of Western scholarship, it stands apart from Japanese colonial narratives. Notably, they acknowledged and respected the lives, histories, and historical imagination of the Korean people, indicating a distinctive perspective that contributed to the evolving understanding of Korea’s cultural legacy.
