Abstract

The sijo included in Sonyeon appear in various forms such as 10, 11, 12, 13, and 15 segments, among which Choe Nam-seon most frequently composed sijo in the 11-segment form with a '4-4-3' structure. The 11-segment form characterized by the ‘4-4-3’ structure inherits the musical framework of classical sijo. In addition, the 10-line, 12-line, 13-line, and 15-line forms were segmented based on units of meaning. Choi Nam-seon’s segmentation of sijo into semantic units indicates his perception of sijo as a literary genre to be read rather than sung. Nonetheless, Choi Nam-seon’s continued use of the musical form of classical sijo in his compositions can be attributed to considerations of popular accessibility. In that era, sijo was enjoyed through both reading and singing; however, for the general public, singing continued to be the more familiar mode of appreciation. Therefore, in Sonyeon, Choi Nam-seon composed many sijo by adopting the musical form of classical sijo. The dual modes of appreciation observed in Sonyeon no longer appear in the sijo in Cheongchun. Compared to those in Sonyeon, the sijo featured in Cheongchun demonstrate a wider range of segmental structures, including 11-, 12-, 13-, 14-, 16-, 17-, 18-, and 19-segment forms. The reason for the diverse segmentation patterns observed in Cheongchun is that Choe Nam-seon was segmentation sijo based on semantic units. That Choe Nam-seon segmented sijo based on units of meaning means that he regarded sijo only as something to be read. In Baekpalbeonne, Choe Nam-seon was once again creating sijo by inheriting the musical form of classical sijo. However, that does not mean that Choe Nam-seon's perception of how sijo should be appreciated changed from reading to singing. The reason Choe Nam-seon was inheriting the musical form of classical sijo in Baekpalbeonne is related to his attempt to establish the status of sijo as both national literature and world literature. In 「Sijo as Chosun National Literature」, Choe Nam-seon presents 'tradition' and 'fixed form' as the grounds for sijo to be included in the ranks of world literature. For that reason, Choe Nam-seon had no choice but to seek the fixed form of sijo in the forms of classical sijo in Baekpalbeonne.
