Abstract

This study investigates contemporary responses to environmental crises and climate change through a comparative analysis of two rural cases in South Korea: the Solar Power Facilities Resistance Movement in Deoksil Village, Annam-myeon, Okcheon-gun, and the energy transition initiative in Miho-dong, Daejeon. Going beyond the conventional framework of environmental protection, the research highlights complex entanglements of humans and nonhumans, living and nonliving beings, and explores the ecological and ethical crossroads at which communities seek alternative modes of coexistence. By focusing on the contrasting approaches to solar energy in each village and the points of conflict they produce, the study reveals the embedded meanings behind their collective actions. In Deoksil, villagers have opposed the installation of solar power infrastructure in order to preserve the ecological balance and cultural identity of their community. In contrast, the energy transition village in Miho-dong, led by local residents and the Haeyu Social Cooperative, has established a decentralized energy system where renewable energy is produced and distributed within the village. These practices propose new models of energy production that prioritize ecological and communal values over capitalist profit. Through these two cases, this study argues that the ecological practices enacted in these villages are not merely technological or economic responses, but forms of interspecies entanglement and symbiogenesis situated within what Donna Haraway calls the Chthulucene—a space-time in which human and nonhuman agencies are inseparably woven into naturecultures, shaping modes of coexistence beyond anthropocentric ontologies.
