Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the results of the cataloging work of Korean Christian missionary archives and to propose the construction of a missionary information archive based on these results. To achieve this, the paper first provides an overview of the cataloging survey conducted from 2021 to 2023, detailing the methods used and the outcomes produced. Additionally, a model for establishing an archive of Chris tian records is proposed. The primary reason for conducting this survey is rooted in the fact that, since the introduction of Christianity to Korea in the late 19th century, various mis sion records have been passed down, but their preservation and documentation have not been properly managed. As a result, there has been no comprehensive list of the existing records, nor has there been a thorough identification of where these records are housed. Despite the historical significance of Ko rean Christian records, many have been damaged or lost while in private possession. Furthermore, historical records related to Korean missions have not been systematically organized, making it difficult to achieve an accurate interpretation of his tory. In this context, the survey for cataloging Korean Chris tian missionary archives aimed to establish a foundation for identifying the historical evidence and records that highlight the significant impact of Korean Christianity on the transfor mation and development of Korean society, from the late 19th century through the 21st century. This survey is highly valued not only for its contribution to the fields of Korean church his tory and missiology but also for its significant role in providing essential records that contribute to the formation of modern Korean culture, thus offering substantial value to the fields of Korean history and Korean studies.
