Abstract
After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the Japanese government pursued “Enrich the Country, Strengthen the Armed Forces” through the westernization. In the late 1860s and early 1870s, Japanese enlightenment thinkers introduced so-called the scientific racism based on anthropometry to the Japanese by translating western geographic books. In 1880s, Japanese intellectuals thought that the Japanese were physically and mentally inferior race than Westerners, and that their ancestor was not the homogeneous race but the mixed race of people migrated from northeastern China via the Korean Peninsula and Malay along the southeast coast of China. However, their mind was not based on the study of Japanese scholars, but on the contents of articles presented by Baelz, a German doctor who was the professor at the Imperial University Medical College at the time However, Baelz explanation of the origin of the Japanese and the inferiority of the Japanese race was not his own idea. He tried to prove the physical and mental characteristics of the Japanese race observed by Kaempfer and Siebold, German doctors who resided in Dejima in Nagasaki in the Edo Period, and the hypothesis raised by Doenitz, a German doctor who was the professor of Anatomy at Tokyo Medical School in the early Meiji Period. At that time, the Japanese, who believed that Western scientific methodology guaranteed objective facts, uncritically accepted Baelz’ view of race. Moreover, the racism, based on physical and mental characteristics, served as an ideology that dominated the Japanese society by the end of World War II.
