Abstract

Regarding the founders and residents of Balhae, the records of the New Book of Tang and the Old Book of Tang can be divided into cases where they are recognized separately and cases where they are understood in a consistent manner. The latter is represented by the descriptions in the Samguk Sajeolyo and the Dongguk Tonggam. Balhae was originally Sokmal Malgal(粟末靺鞨), which is interpreted as a ‘separate species of Goguryeo(高句麗別種). ’ In other words, Sokmal Malgal, who founded Balhae, is a separate species of Goguryeo, and is interpreted as a Goguryeo person in a broad sense. Here, the recognition of the Malgal(靺鞨), which had previously been a separate species in our history, began anew. In the history of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla, the Malgal were considered as a border people or an outsider. However, they came to be recognized as part of the residents of Goguryeo. The position on the Jurchen(女眞), which appeared after the fall of Balhae, gradually changed from the Goryeo period to the Joseon period. Yu Deuk-gong and Jeong Yak-yong are representative examples. Yu Deuk-gong said that Goguryeo people were Balhae people, which means that he recognized the Sokmal Malgal, a separate tribe of Goguryeo, as Goguryeo people. Jeong Yak-yong went so far as to claim that the Jurchen were Balhae people who lived within the Tuman River and the Amnok River. The geography of Balhae was not recognized as more specific until the Goryeo Dynasty after the 5 capitals, 15 bu, and 62 ju were mentioned in the Balhae Chronicles of the New Book of Tang. After that, the geography of Balhae was accepted more specifically as the Liao Dynasty, which emerged after the fall of Balhae, was introduced, and this recognition did not change much until the early 18th century. The Ming and Qing Dynasties began to question the recognition of the Liao Dynasty as they organized the geography of this region, and eventually, in the Daecheong Il-tong-ji, they came to understand that the provinces and counties of Balhae in the Liao Dynasty’s geography mostly followed the names of Balhae before its fall, and were not the old lands of Balhae. This led to a new approach to Balhae geography, and in the process, the claim that the West, East, and South capitals of Balhae were located within Joseon territory gained strength. In this way, it is understood that the founders and residents of Balhae were descendants of Goguryeo people, and that its territory was also Goguryeo territory, and furthermore, that three of the five capitals of Balhae were located within Joseon territory. As a result, it is judged that Joseon intellectuals now regarded Balhae not as a foreign country but as their own country, and accepted its history as part of our own history.
