Abstract
This study aimed to identify the cluster types of negative media influences on young children, verify whether these cluster types differ according to child and family factors, and examine whether caregivers’ media guidance, restriction behaviors, and young children’s media rule compliance vary across the clusters. For this purpose, the responses of 985 caregivers of young children attending kindergartens and daycare centers were analyzed, using data from the 2023 Children’s Media Use Survey conducted by the Korea Press Foundation. Custer analysis was conducted to categorize the types of negative media influences on young children, and a chi-square test and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to examine the variables associated with these types of negative media influences. The results were as follows. First, three distinct clusters of negative media influence were classified: average, low-influence, and high-influence. Second, among the child and family variables, the cluster types of negative media influences on young children were found to differ according to the child’s birth order, their media education experience, as well as the age and media education experience of their caregivers. Third, caregivers’ media guidance and young children’s rule compliance with media use differed significantly across cluster types. This study is significant in that it identifies distinct cluster types of negative media influence on young children and discusses tailored educational approaches and environmental strategies to mitigate negative media effects.
