Abstract
This study examined the sequential mediationg effects of self-concept clarity and grit in the relationship between cyberbullying victimization and depression among adolescents. A total of 319 middle school students from Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon participated in the study. Cyberbullying victimization was assessed using a validated scale, depression using the CES-D, self-concept clarity using the Self-Concept Clarity Scale (SCCS), and grit using the Korean version of the Grit Scale for children. To analyze the data, Pearson’s correlation analyses were conducted using SPSS 23.0, followed by regression-based mediation analyses employing PROCESS Macro (Model 6; Hayes, 2013). The results indicated the following. First, cyberbullying victimization showed a significant positive correlation with depression, whereas self-concept clarity and grit were negatively correlated with both variables. Second, cyberbullying victimization was indirectly associated with depression through reduced self-concept clarity, which in turn predicted lower levels of grit, demonstrating a significant sequential mediation effect. These findings suggest the need for intervention programs that strengthen both self-concept clarity and grit to prevent or reduce depression associated with cyberbullying victimization among adolescents. Finally, this study analyzed grit as a single construct; therefore, future research should examine potential differences among grit subcomponents to identify more specific mediation pathways.
