Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the mediating effects of parental media intervention on the relationship between parental media literacy and young children’s media self-regulation, specifically categorizing intervention into relationship-oriented and rule-oriented approaches. To this end, an online survey was conducted with 324 parents of young children aged three to five, and data from 297 responses were utilized for the analysis. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 30.0 and PROCESS Macro 4.3, and the bootstrapping method was performed to examine mediation effects. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, parental media literacy was found to have a significant positive effect on young children’s media self-regulation. Second, it was confirmed that only indirect effects of parental media literacy through both relationship-oriented intervention and rule-oriented intervention were statistically significant, indicating a full mediating effect. Therefore, by empirically verifying the mediating effects of parental media intervention (relationship-oriented and rule-oriented interventions) on young children’s media self-regulation, this study is significant in empirically confirming the importance of parental roles in enhancing young children’s media self-regulation. These findings can be utilized as basic data for the development of parent education programs.
