Abstract

This study aimed to explore the application of computer simulation-based counselor training platforms that combine deliberate practice and technology, recognizing the need for a sustainable, quality training system for counselors. To this end, virtual simulation-based education that is used in medical training, such as virtual patients, was examined, followed by five computer simulation-based counseling training platforms used in other countries (Skillsetter, USC-ICT, SIMersion, Second Life, and Kognito). The review of the literature on the characteristics and effectiveness of the selected platforms suggested that counseling simulations with virtual clients reduce the risk that comes with practicing with actual clients, facilitate counselor growth through deliberate practice of skills, and minimize the barriers of time and space, increasing access to training. The advantages and limitations of each platform (inclusion of deliberate practice principles, platform structure, implementation of virtual clients, methods of interactions with virtual clients, and development of case scenarios) were discussed, as well as the applicability of computer simulation-based training in South Korea. Lastly, limitations of the present study and directions for future research were discussed.
