Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of adolescents who have attempted suicide and to develop a model of the suicide attempt and recovery process in adolescents. For this, we conducted in-depth interviews with 10 adolescents who had attempted suicide and received counseling and analyzed interviews using the grounded theory research method. The analysis revealed that the central phenomena were “suicidal ideation” and “suicidal behavior.” The causal conditions associated with the central phenomena were “unstable psychological state”, “self-destructive coping”, “disconnection and isolation”, and “despair about self and life”. The contextual conditions were “social and environmental stress”, “dysfunctional family relationships”, and “negative counseling experiences”. Furthermore, the intervening conditions for the central phenomenon were “enhanced social support”, “environmental changes”, and “positive counseling experiences”. The actions/interactions related to these phenomena were “growth through experience”, “forming healthy relationships”, “acceptance”, “living daily life”, “perceiving the preciousness of life”, and “reflecting on life”. The suicide attempt recovery process was specified as a four stage consisting of ‘suicide attempt stage’, ‘personal effort and external change state’, ‘recovery stage’, and ‘growth stage’. Lastly, the core category of the adolescent suicide attempt and recovery process was identified as “denying one’s existence and trying to disappear, but gradually building small changes, finding connections to the world, and ultimately accepting oneself”. Based on these findings, implications for counseling and therapeutic interventions for adolescent who have experienced suicide attempts were suggested.
