Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate and standardize the reliability and validity of the College Life Adaptation Scale for adult learners at distance learning universities. To achieve this goal, the study conducted a test on 1,493 students enrolled at K University and divided the 1,484 valid data in half. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted separately for the two domains of the test (academic and environmental). The exploratory factor analysis identified four sub-factors within each domain, all demonstrating high reliability. Considering eigenvalues and factor loadings, 18 items were finally selected for each domain. The confirmatory factor analysis indicated satisfactory model fit indices (CFI, NFI, IFI > .90; RESEA < .08) across both domains. The final version of the College Life Adaptation Scale for adult learners at distance universities was validated, comprising two main domains (academic and environmental), eight sub-factors (adaptation to distance university systems, academic satisfaction, academic performance adaptation, career adaptation, university satisfaction, relational adaptation, external situation management, and psychological adaptation), and 36 items. The scores on the College Life Adaptation Scale showed significant correlations with students' academic performance from the previous semester and their self-assessed adaptation to college life. Finally, the study provided normative data for new and transfer students, along with cut-off scores for identifying students at risk of maladaptation. This study has academic and practical significance in validating and standardizing a college life adaptation scale for adult learners at distance universities.
