Abstract

There is a view that Emmanuel Levinas’s principal works, Totality and Infinity: An Essay on Exteriority (1961) and Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence (1973), show a significant philosophical shift as well as highlight the gap between periods. This perception might stem from the apparent transformation in the figure of the Other, where the master figure in Totality and Infinity is replaced by the neighbor figure in Otherwise than Being. However, this may be a hasty conclusion resulting from a general reading of the two works. Levinas had already left clues about the development of Otherwise than Being within Totality and Infinity. This suggests a more gradual transition rather than a stark separation/disconnection between the two works. Therefore, it can be said that the two works are continuous rather than discontinuous in this article. To substantiate this claim, it is necessary to closely examine the commonalities and differences between the two works and deepen the understanding of the “neighbor,” “the other in the same,” and “ethical language” in Otherwise than Being. Ultimately, both Totality and Infinity and Otherwise than Being try to emphasize the necessity of understanding being from the other of being. This is revealed by the difference in emphasis, which indicates a gradual change in the same context rather than a discontinuity in the transition from one work to another.
