본 연구는 레비나스 철학의 중심인 형이상학적 욕망에 대해 사유하면서, 사랑의 의미를 환대와 대속 개념을 중심으로 살펴본다. 레비나스에게 철학은 형이상학적 욕망이고, 타자를 향한 욕망이며, 사랑의 지혜다. 그의 이러한 사유의 흐름은 환대와 대속을 중심으로 전개된다. 레비나스는 그의 전반기 대표작인 『전체성과 무한』에서 타자를 향한 욕망으로서의 형이상학적 욕망을 환대로 설명한다. 환대는 타인을 나의 집으로 맞아들이는 사랑의 행위이며, 이를 통해서 존재론이 아니라 윤리가 제1철학이 된다. 한편 레비나스는 그의 후반기 대표작 『존재와 달리 또는 존재성을 넘어』에서 환대의 수동성을 발전시켜 환대 개념을 넘어 감성으로서의 감성으로서의 타자의 근접성에 주목하면서 대속을 형이상학적 욕망의 중심에 놓는다. 대속은 나의 주인인 타인에게 나 자신을 희생하는 구체적 사랑의 행위이며, 윤리적 주체성을 찾아서 책임 윤리에 도달하게 만드는 행위이다. 이를 통해서 레비나스적인 사랑의 정점인 비대칭적 관계가 형성된다. 이와 같이 본 연구는 레비나스의 형이상학적 욕망과 사랑을 환대와 대속 개념을 중심으로 고찰한다.
Abstract
This study examined metaphysical desire, the center of Levinas’ philosophy, as it delved into the meaning of love, focusing on the hospitality and substitution that the philosopher advocated. For Levinas, philosophy is a metaphysical desire, a desire for others, and the wisdom of love. The flow of his thoughts revolved around hospitality and substitution. In Totality and Infinity, the representative work of the first half of his career, Levinas explained metaphysical desire as a desire for others on the basis of hospitality. Hospitality is an act of love that welcomes others, and through this, ethics, not ontology, becomes the first philosophy. Levinas developed the idea of hospitality’s passivity in his late masterpiece Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence, which goes beyond the concept of hospitality to extend to the proximity of the other as sensibility and places substitution at the center of metaphysical desire. Substitution is a concrete act of love in which one sacrifices oneself for another person who is one’s master, and one reaches the ethics of responsibility by finding ethical subjectivity. Through this process, an asymmetrical relationship, the pinnacle of Levinasian love, is formed.
