Abstract
This paper aims to demonstrate that after Being and Time, Heidegger sought to metaphysically deepen the so-called fundamental ontology through the concept of “metontology.” On the one hand, it critiques the conventional interpretation of metontology in the traditional metaphysical sense. On the other hand, it proposes an interpretation of metontology as a “metaphysical deepening of fundamental ontology,” actively reconstructing its own problems, methods, and perspectives to clarify the concept of metontology more thoroughly. Central to this interpretation and reconstruction is the foundational ontological concept of “existence.” This paper argues that existence should be recognized as the horizon and source of metontology, and on this basis, argue that metontology is not merely a metaphysical modification or supplement to fundamental ontology but a deepening of fundamental ontology. The so-called “overturning” (Umschlag) characteristic of metontology will also be reinterpreted in this context.
